Choosing Corn Hybrids: Know Your Markets

In the January newsletter of the Ontario Corn Producer, OCPA reminded growers of the importance of understanding the marketing implications of all the hybrids they choose to grow. This issue is increasingly critical as more new hybrids that have not received approval in the European Union are introduced into the Ontario marketplace.

The Canadian Seed Trade Association maintains a list of hybrid corn varieties which contain events that have NOT been approved in the EU – the list below, taken from CSTA’s website (http://cdnseed.org/), is current as of December 9, 2002.

CSTA cautions that although the list represents the group’s best efforts to collect available hybrid data, the organization accepts no responsibilities for any errors or omissions. Seed company representatives will also provide information on which of their hybrids carry traits that are not approved in the EU.
