Storing
and Drying Corn
by David Morris
Corn growers are
constantly looking for ways to cut costs. According to Andy Timmermans,
elevator operators are no different. Grain drying and handling is a very
competitive business and saving a few fractions of a cent per bushel on
drying can make the difference between profit and loss.
Andy and his brother-in-law Dan Deloyer own and operate Timmermans Elevators
on their farm near Sebringville, in Perth County. In addition to the elevator,
they have a 300-sow farrow-to-finish operation, plus about 600 acres of
crops (corn, soybeans and winter wheat). Andy and his father began the
elevator business in 1981, and following the retirement of Andys
father in 1989, Andy and Dan went into partnership. Andy manages the elevator
and grain marketing side of the business, with the help of a full-time
employee in the office/scale house, while Dan oversees the hog operations,
again with the help of a full-time hired man. They also employ a number
of people, part-time, during the busy season. (Full
