Henderson Re-elected at AAC
Spencerville dairy producer Paul Henderson has been re-elected to a second term as chairman of the Agricultural
Adaptation Council. Returning to the executive for 1999 are Vice-Chair Murray Porteous and Tom Smyth from the Food
and Consumer Products Manufacturers’ of Canada. Bob Bedggood, president of the Christian Farmers Federation of
Ontario, is the only new member of the council, replacing John Markus. OCPA President Bob Down was re-elected to
the council for another year.
Pioneer Supports Ag Communications
Congratulations to Pioneer Hi-Bred Limited for their continued strong support of agricultural journalism and
communications. The company has announced $35,000 in support of an innovative, integrated agricultural communications
program at the University of Guelph. Program development will take place in the new Faculty of Environmental Design
and Rural Development’s School of Rural Extension Studies. The new program will be directed by Owen Roberts, head
of the university’s research communications office and creator of the SPARK (Students Promoting Awareness of Research
Knowledge) program.
Novartis Seeds Announces Cottam Expansion
Novartis Seeds is investing more than $1 million to expand
their seed production facility in Cottam, Ontario to meet the increased demand by Canadian growers for quality
NK™ brand seed. An additional 27,000 square feet will be added to the existing facility. Completion of the project
is planned for early July 1999.
Wildlife Impact Study
An intensive one-year scientific study being conducted by
the Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Association (OSCIA), on behalf of the Ontario Agricultural Commodity Council,
will undertake a wildlife impact assessment on agriculture and develop a strategy to address the issue of annual
crop and livestock losses through wildlife management.
